Definition
OSINT is the method of collecting, verifying and analysing information from publicly available sources. News, public records, trade registry notices, domain records, images and publicly visible social media content are the main sources.
Why verification matters
There is plenty of wrong, outdated or manipulated information online. Confusing people with the same name is the most common mistake. Reliable OSINT logs every finding with source and date, cross-verifies it and clearly marks unverified information.
Limits
OSINT works only with publicly visible information; it does not enter private accounts, closed groups or protected records. Obtaining information by deception through fake accounts is also problematic legally and ethically. Results are presented not as definite verdicts but with a confidence level.
