Limit the damage first

Call your bank or card company immediately, report the transaction and dispute it. Keep the account you paid and the receipt. Change the password on accounts using the same password and turn on two-step verification.

Preserve the evidence

Before deleting, record screenshots of the listing, site, correspondence and profile with date and time; note link addresses and usernames. These records help in the criminal complaint and later steps. You can see how it is done on the digital evidence preservation page.

Criminal complaint

File a criminal complaint with the police or prosecutor. Presenting your evidence in an organised file makes the procedures easier. The process is run by the competent authorities.

Beware of a second fraud

After being defrauded you may meet people saying "we will help you get your money back". These are often a new fraud attempt. Treat every offer with upfront payment and a guarantee with suspicion. We too do not guarantee recovery. See the online fraud page.
