Check accounts first

In newer cars the manufacturer's app can show the vehicle's location. Someone else may have logged into your account or been given sharing permission. Check sessions, registered users and sharing settings in the app; if something looks suspicious, change the password and close sessions.

Physical check

  • Exterior: under the bumper, inside wheel arches, wheel wells and chassis.
  • Interior: under the seats, glovebox, console, steering column and boot.
  • OBD socket: whether a device is plugged in.
  • Electrical: extra wires connected to the fuse box or wiring.

Limits

Small magnetic devices and logger-type (non-transmitting) devices are not easy to find by eye. For a reliable result RF scanning, raising the car so the underside is fully visible, and heat or physical inspection may be needed. See the vehicle sweep page for this work.

If you find a device

Do not remove it; photograph it in place and record it. For evidence reasons consult a lawyer first; then follow the steps to take. If someone is following you and you are afraid, call 112 or 155 in an emergency.
